If somebody asks what that visitor agreed to, you can answer.
A consent record keeps more than a yes or a no. It holds the version of the banner that was on screen, the categories offered and how each one was set when the visitor arrived at it, the choice they made, the time, and which regional rule was in force. When someone changes their mind, the new record joins the old one instead of replacing it, so the sequence of decisions stays readable. You can export a date range yourself and hand it to your adviser, an authority or an auditor without asking us for it. A record is tied to the visit rather than to a name, so proving that someone was asked does not mean building a file on them.
The record shows what was on screen
Banner wording changes over the life of a site, and an outcome recorded without its context proves very little. Each record is tied to the exact version shown, so you can see the choice the way the visitor saw it.
Withdrawals are kept, not overwritten
Somebody who accepts in March and withdraws in July leaves two records, not one corrected one. The history is the useful part, because the question asked later is usually what applied on a particular date.
The history leaves with you
Records download as a file for the period you choose, so your evidence is not trapped in a supplier's account. If you stop using Siteleon, the consent history goes with you.
